TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday that the recent enterovirus outbreak is stabilizing but warned that transmission is still ongoing.

The CDC said that between Nov. 23 and 29, 11,913 outpatient and emergency visits were recorded, roughly matching the 12,161 visits reported the previous week, per CNA.

So far this year, 19 severe enterovirus cases have been confirmed, including nine deaths. Among the severe cases, 15 involved newborns, underscoring that children under five remain the highest-risk group for serious illness, officials said.

Coxsackievirus A6 continues to be the predominant strain in the community, followed by Coxsackievirus A16 and A5, according to CDC data over the past four weeks.

The CDC said warning signs of severe infection include lethargy, persistent vomiting or rapid heartbeat, which require immediate medical attention.

Adults can carry enterovirus without noticeable symptoms and may unknowingly infect children. Families are advised to change clothes and wash hands thoroughly upon returning home.

The CDC reminded parents to keep up proper cleaning and disinfection at home and in learning environments to reduce transmission risk.
