TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Chien Feng IV long-range attack drone will reportedly undergo testing in the US in January.
If test results meet US and Taiwan military requirements, preparations for pre-production will begin, according to the Liberty Times. The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology developed the drone in cooperation with US defense firm Kratos and displayed it at the Taipei Aerospace and Defense Technology Exhibition in September.
The Chien Feng is based on Kratos’ MQM-178 target drone, which can reach speeds of up to Mach 0.69 and has a maximum range of 1,000 kilometers. It uses the same engine and airframe design and is expected to have a maximum flight altitude of approximately 10,670 meters, Liberty Times reported.
The Chien Feng’s electro-optical/infrared targeting system and guidance and control systems are all produced in Taiwan. It will be armed with a 30-kilogram high-performance warhead.
The drone is confirmed to be one of several domestically made and Taiwan–US co-developed attack drones to be covered in the proposed NT$1.25 trillion (US$40 billion) special military budget.
