TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Deputy Foreign Minister Francois Wu (吳志中) reportedly made a secret trip to Israel, according to Reuters.
Reuters cited three sources as saying that Wu visited Israel within recent weeks. Two of the sources said the trip took place this month, but they did not say who he met or what was discussed.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Taiwan and Israel both value freedom and democracy and will continue to engage in mutually beneficial exchanges and cooperation, according to Reuters.
Taiwan sees similarities between Israel’s security situation and its cross-strait challenges. It considers Israel an important democratic partner.
Last month, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said Taiwan and Israel face “similar geopolitical environments” and share an interest in combining security and technology. He criticized Palestine for backing Beijing's "one-China principle."
When pressed about concerns over Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank, Lin said Taiwan acts based on its national interests and seeks to provide aid neutrally.
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) also expressed support for Israel during talks with a visiting American Israel Public Affairs Committee delegation in October. “Israel’s determination and capacity to defend its territory provides a valuable model for Taiwan,” Lai said.
He said Taiwan needs to embody “the spirit of David against Goliath” in its fight against authoritarian coercion.
