TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — DPP Legislators Chen Ying (陳瑩) and Chuang Jui-hsiung (莊瑞雄) have successfully pushed the central government to expand care programs for seniors living alone starting next year.
CNA reported Friday that estimates put Taiwan’s number of seniors living alone at about 700,000, with Taitung reaching 10,658 and posting the nation’s highest rate at 5.2%. Yet, Chen and Chuang noted that only 16% of seniors in Taitung have emergency safety devices, compared with the 24% national average.
Chen said the health ministry has agreed to widen the program. She said the new plan will cover not only people living alone but also seniors who live with another senior or with someone unable to provide care.
Chen said the upgraded services will include home visits, check-in calls, meal support, medical help, and daily-life assistance. She added that seniors can also choose new smart emergency devices, either fixed or wearable, to call for help more easily.
Chen also said the ministry plans to spend NT$62 billion (US$2 billion) over two years on the nationwide expansion. She noted that she will keep working with local officials to make sure senior residents in Taitung get steady support and can age safely at home.
