TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) on Friday signed a contract worth NT$15.9 billion (US$509 million) with Kathy Yang (楊秋瑾), Foxconn's current rotating chief executive officer, for a joint development project at the Kaohsiung MRT Yellow Line Y15 station.
Chen and Yang said the project will focus on cutting-edge industries, including AI, AR, Web3.0, connected vehicles, cloud computing, electric vehicles, and digital health, per CNA. Chen thanked Foxconn for its confidence and continued investment in Kaohsiung.
Over the past three years, Foxconn has invested NT$25 billion in Kaohsiung, including a computing center, software development center, electric buses, and battery R&D. The Y15 project will serve as Foxconn’s southern Taiwan headquarters and is expected to attract additional corporate investment.
Yang said the development will act as a key platform for Foxconn’s advanced technology initiatives. The company will gradually move its teams to the site and provide secure housing for employees relocating to the Asia New Bay Area.
The headquarters is expected to become a landmark for Foxconn as it engages with global clients. Yang also announced three community initiatives, including a NT$19 million mobile mammography unit for rural women, the Kaohsiung Foxconn Scholarship for students, and AI training camps.
Kaohsiung MRT Director Wu Chia-chang (吳嘉昌) said the 1.1-hectare site is at the core of Asia Bay 2.0, the second phase of the Asia New Bay Area, near the Asian Asset Management Center. The site allows 60% building coverage and a floor area ratio of 630%, adjacent to the Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal and Kaohsiung Exhibition Center.
Foxconn will invest NT$15.9 billion to build two Grade A office towers of 45 and 32 floors, including retail, restaurants, and corporate housing, with a total development area of about 52,000 pings (approx. 172,000 m²). The towers will connect to the cruise terminal via skybridges.
After completion, the project will provide 20,000 pings (approx. 66,000 m²) of office space for the “Kaohsiung Asia Bay – Foxconn Flagship Headquarters” and accommodate other tech companies. It is expected to create 3,000 jobs, generate NT$20 billion in annual output, contribute NT$6.3 billion to metro construction, and add 227 public parking spaces for nearby exhibition facilities.
