TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Taipei Mayor Hou You-yi (侯友宜) announced plans Wednesday to expand the city’s mental health network to 14 from 7 centers by 2030 to tackle rising depression rates.
Speaking at a city government meeting, Hou said the goal is to create an accessible support network for residents, per CNA. The city plans to integrate international practices and implement programs across schools, workplaces, and communities.
Citing government statistics, Hou said nearly 9% of Taiwanese adults suffered from depression in 2019, affecting almost 2 million people. Data showed that psychiatric diagnoses among 15- to 30-year-olds rose nearly 30% between 2016 and 2021.
Middle-aged adults have also seen rising mental health challenges, with the prevalence among 30- to 45-year-olds reaching nearly 25% from 2010 to 2020. Hou warned that without effective government action, the situation could worsen.
Hou said support will focus on younger adults facing high workplace stress. Two centers in Banqiao and Sanchong Districts are planned for next year.
