TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday condemned China for falsely claiming Taiwan engages in dollar diplomacy.
During a press conference on Tuesday, China’s foreign ministry accused Taiwan of engaging in dollar diplomacy “under the banners of ‘trust’ and ‘prosperity.’” Beijing also said the DPP’s pursuit of “Taiwan independence” was doomed to fail.
In response, Taiwan's foreign ministry said in a statement that China’s “shameless and fallacious accusations” were an attempt to tarnish Taiwan’s reputation as a trustworthy global partner. Taiwan has always been a force for good, it said.
Since Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) took office in 2024, Taiwan has promoted the Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project. By leveraging industrial strengths and responding to the real development needs of diplomatic allies and like-minded partners, Taiwan shares its knowledge, experience, and technology to achieve mutual prosperity and win-win outcomes, the foreign ministry said.
All cooperation projects are carried out under open, transparent, and reviewable mechanisms, the ministry said. “The purpose is not short-term exchange, but the establishment of institutionalized, enduring partnerships that build long-term trust and deliver substantive cooperation outcomes,” the foreign ministry said.
The ministry pointed out that China is a true practitioner of dollar diplomacy. Beijing has lured Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, including Honduras, to switch recognition through false promises and hollow slogans.
The ministry called on the global community and former diplomatic allies to recognize that Beijing’s so-called cooperation is “often nothing more than poison wrapped in sugar.”
