TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Sugar Corporation on Tuesday signed an agreement with the National Atomic Research Institute and Nice Enterprise to capture carbon emissions from sugar production.
The agreement was signed at Taisugar’s Huwei sugar factory in Yunlin County, per CNA. Carbon dioxide from the factory’s exhaust gas will be captured with NARI equipment, converted into baking soda, and then processed by Nice into soaps and detergents, per UDN.
Taisugar business division head Huang Cheng-chung (黃正忠) said the company has expanded beyond sugar production by reusing bagasse, or leftover pulp, as fuel. The project, he said, links agriculture, manufacturing, and consumer products into a low-carbon value chain.
Nice factory manager Chang Chih-yu (張志毓) said the Huwei site achieves net-negative emissions through bagasse-fired power generation. Adding carbon capture turns the site into a fully green production zone, he said.
The partners said the project could serve as a model for other industries seeking practical pathways to carbon reuse and net-zero production. Officials described the initiative as a step toward scaling Taiwan’s circular economy beyond pilot projects and into mass manufacturing.
Taisugar added that in response to climate change, the company has expanded beyond sugar production into hog farming, green energy, and sustainable land management.
