TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The approved US arms sales demonstrate Washington’s continued fulfillment of its security commitments to Taiwan, Presidential Office Spokesperson Karen Kuo (郭雅慧) said on Thursday.
The Trump administration on Wednesday informed the US Congress of eight arms sales packages to Taiwan worth NT$350.3 billion (US$11.11 billion), including Taiwan Tactical Network and Tactical Assault Kits, Army AH-1W SuperCobra helicopter spare parts, M109A7 Paladin self-propelled howitzers, HIMARS systems, and additional anti-armor missiles.
“The Taiwanese government expresses its sincere gratitude,” Kuo said, per the Presidential Office. She pointed out that this is the second arms sale announcement under the second Trump administration, reaffirming the importance the US government places on Taiwan’s defense needs and the Taiwan–US partnership.
As regional security challenges continue to intensify, Taiwan’s defense budget for next year is expected to surpass 3% of GDP, in line with NATO standards, and is anticipated to reach 5% of GDP by 2030, Kuo said. The government has also proposed a special defense budget to bolster resilience and asymmetric capabilities, she added.
Kuo pledged that Taiwan will continue to implement defense reforms, boost whole-of-society defense resilience, and preserve peace through strength. Taiwan will continue to work with the US and other like-minded countries to uphold freedom and democracy, and maintain regional peace and prosperity, she said.
