TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), former chairman of the Taiwan People’s Party, made a visit to the Legislative Yuan on Friday, UDN reported.
Ko held a press conference with TPP caucus leader Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) and discussed issues facing the party in 2026. Ko also met with KMT caucus leader Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁) and held a press conference with DPP legislators and DPP caucus leader Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘).
Ko said that his primary reason to visit the Legislative Yuan was to campaign for amendments to the Assisted Reproduction Act promoted by Legislator Chen Chao-tzu (陳昭姿), which would ease legal restrictions on surrogacy in Taiwan. Ko lamented that he was unable to do more to promote the issue due to his year-long detention in his trial on corruption charges, per UDN.
During the press conference, reporters asked Ko about the ongoing disputes between the government and opposition-controlled Legislative Yuan. Ko said those with the most power have the most responsibility and criticized President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), saying he could easily resolve the deadlock with a single decision to negotiate with legislators.
Commenting on his legal troubles, which many view as politically motivated, Ko said that he continues to have good intentions. Despite financial hardships, Ko said he will overcome the challenges and, as an important figure in the TPP, he remains committed to assisting the party through the municipal elections this year and beyond.
In the meeting with KMT caucus leader Fu Kun-chi, Ko and Huang expressed gratitude for the parties’ willingness to work together on important legislative matters. When Ko mentioned negotiating with the Lai administration, Fu reportedly expressed skepticism that they could ever cooperate with the DPP, per UDN.
Fu also praised the blue-white alliance and expressed confidence that the opposition would perform well in the upcoming municipal elections.
In discussions with DPP caucus leader Ker Chien-ming, Ko suggested the TPP and DPP work together to legalize surrogacy. However, Ker argued that the TPP should first help the DPP to pass President Lai's budget for 2026.
Ko expressed disagreement and indicated that his priority was the Assisted Reproduction Act. In response to assertions that he is the TPP's “spiritual leader” and could direct their votes, Ko asked DPP lawmakers to make greater efforts to negotiate directly with TPP lawmakers on passing the budget, UDN reported.
