TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Design Research Institute has upgraded the B3 level of Taipei Main Station, one of Taiwan’s busiest metro hubs, revamping the space, color scheme, lighting, and signage to enhance passenger services.
The station, which connects rail, MRT, and high-speed rail services, has been in operation for over 30 years for the MRT section. The initiative aims to modernize aging, dimly lit areas and streamline scattered retail shops to enhance the passenger experience per CNA.
The station features numerous columns, particularly in the area where the three rail systems intersect. These spaces handle heavy passenger traffic, and some commuters got lost within the station.
According to Taipei Rapid Transit Corp., the station is the busiest MRT station in the city, with an average of over 280,000 passengers daily, far surpassing the second-ranked Ximen Station and third-ranked Taipei City Hall Station.
The institute said that it covered some columns with partitions, creating curved spaces that improve passenger flow and open up more usable area. The partitions also provide space for luggage storage, service counters, meeting points, charging stations, and digital screens.
The upgraded lighting features warm tones, with slim linear lights installed along some walkways to guide passengers. The flooring features a seamless design to reduce noise from rolling luggage.
The institute added that it renovated Zhongshan MRT Station between 2022 and May. The project included rebuilding Exit 1 and linking it to the nearby park. It also introduced new digital displays with larger fonts that show train car crowding levels and improve passenger flow, and created additional spaces for device charging and meetings.
In October, the institute also completed the renovation project at Changhua Railway Station. The agency used warm wooden tones to redesign the interior, upgraded the ticketing area, added improved lighting, and reorganized retail and service desk spaces.
