TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The search is continuing for an F-16V pilot and his plane more than 72 hours after they went missing over the Pacific east of Hualien, reports said Saturday.
Air Force Captain Hsin Po-yi (辛柏毅) was conducting a training mission when the F-16V Block 20 jet disappeared off the radar on the evening of Dec. 6. While he said “eject” three times shortly before, there was no evidence that he actually succeeded in ejecting from the plane before the crash.
After the critical 72-hour rescue window closed, the military has ordered the search to continue, per CNA. The efforts to find Hsin are being conducted at sea, in the air, and along the coast.
The Coast Guard Administration said weather conditions in the area east of Fengbin Township were much better Saturday than on previous days. The Air Force said it had launched six aerial sorties over the area where Hsin and his plane were believed to have disappeared.
The Navy sent two ships to participate in the search, and the Coast Guard sent six. On land, 183 officers patrolled the shore with 47 vehicles at their disposal.
The fighter jet was an upgraded version of an F-16A/B jet. Speculation has centered on a malfunction of the jet’s main onboard computer as the likely cause for the incident.
