TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan People’s Party Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) said he will lead a delegation to Washington this week.
Departing Sunday afternoon, Huang plans to meet with US government officials to discuss regional defense issues and trade tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, reported UDN. Three TPP members will join Huang on the US trip: legislative caucus leader Chen Chih-han (陳智菡), Wang An-hsiang (王安祥), and the party’s former international affairs director, Lin Tzu-yu (林子宇).
The group will stay in the US for three days and return to Taiwan on Wednesday morning. Huang briefly spoke with reporters at Taoyuan International Airport before the flight and said additional details of the trip will be discussed after he returns later in the week, reported SETN.
Commenting on the sudden announcement and departure, Huang said discussions have been ongoing with the US for some time. He waited until today to inform the public out of respect for the US side but could not reveal too many details before the trip.
Huang said negotiating weapons procurement and tariffs with the US are critical issues for the Taiwanese people. As a responsible opposition party, the TPP has sought to gather as much information as possible in Taiwan, but the ruling DPP has not been willing to cooperate, he said.
In this context, the TPP will meet directly with US officials to exchange views and gather reliable information on two major issues of public concern, per SETN.
