TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Marine Corps battalion responsible for land-based security has begun using US-made M4A1 rifles, replacing domestically produced weapons to improve maneuverability and effectiveness in close-quarters combat.
Images shared on social media recently show Marines from the battalion carrying M4A1 rifles, per CNA. A source familiar with the matter told the news agency on Saturday that the unit has fully transitioned to the M4A1, while a second battalion is planned for later this year.
The Marine Corps formally established the First Security Battalion under the Air Defense and Base Guard Group on Nov. 14, 2024. Aside from officers and non-commissioned officers, the unit is composed of one-year conscripts.
Its primary missions include operating vehicles and providing security for mobile missile crews and radar vehicle crews, ensuring site security, and conducting reconnaissance patrols. Last April, personnel were still seen training with domestically produced T65K2 rifles and T74 machine guns.
Su Tzu-yun (蘇紫雲), a division director at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research, told CNA that the M4A1 rifles are likely part of military aid to Taiwan approved during the administration of former US President Joe Biden. Compared with the T65K2, the M4A1 has a shorter barrel, offering better handling and maneuverability, and features Picatinny rails for mounting various tactical accessories.
He added that the Taiwanese military could consider allowing troops, in addition to standard-issue gear, to use self-procured optical sights and other equipment. Su also emphasized that Taiwan’s shore-based anti-ship missiles are critical strategic assets.
He said the battalion should not only upgrade its small arms but also strengthen protective firepower with wheeled armored vehicles or armored Humvees.
