TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Taipei resident who won a lottery draw for one share of TSMC stock hung up on the call informing them of the prize, mistaking it for a scam.
Taipei Department of Economic Development Commissioner Chen Chun-an (陳俊安) on Monday announced the winner and the rejected call, per Liberty Times. Chen joked that Taipei residents “have strong fraud awareness” and said the department would follow up with the winner through other channels.
The “Shop in Taipei and win big” campaign, launched on Nov. 11, allows participants to enter the lottery after spending NT$200 (US$6.32) in Taipei and registering their purchases. Spending at partner stores doubles the odds of winning, and total registered spending has reached NT$3.2 billion to date.
Starlux Airlines also sponsored 10 round-trip tickets for two from Taipei to Phoenix. The airline said Phoenix is a sister city of Taipei and the fifth North American destination in its network.
The department reminded participants that registration for the campaign ends on March 8. The next lottery drawing is scheduled for Feb. 23, featuring TSMC stock, three round-trip tickets from Taipei to Phoenix, and home appliances.
The final grand draw will be held on March 11, with top prizes including NT$10 million in cash, a Tesla Model Y, Nintendo Switch 2, and a PlayStation 5.
